September 2011: Royal Woolwich Arsenal Branding
The signage was designed with an architectural theme to compliment the various historic armoury buildings and artillery memorabilia situated around the site.
The armoury site was initially established as an ordanance storage depot in 1671 and later became known as the Royal Arsenal in 1805 at the suggestion of King George III.
The Arsenal was to become a renowned centre of excellence in mechanical engineering and employed notable engineers including Samuel Bentham, Marc Isambard Brunel and Henry Maudsley.
In 1866 workers at the Arsenal formed a football club initially known as Dial Square, after the workshops at the heart of the complex. After winning their first game on December 11th in The Isle of Dogs, winning against Eastern Wanderers, the club was two weeks later renamed to Royal Arsenal. Then in 1893 the club entered the professional football league as Woolwich Arsenal, moving to its north London home in 1913. Today the club is simply known as Arsenal F.C.
